DBT works by teaching you to hold two truths at once: accepting where you are right now while simultaneously working to change. This dialectical balance is especially relevant during detox, where you must accept the discomfort of withdrawal while actively choosing recovery.
During your stay, our clinicians teach the four core DBT skill modules adapted for the detox setting:
**Mindfulness** — learning to stay present with uncomfortable physical sensations and cravings without reacting impulsively. This is critical during withdrawal when the urge to use feels overwhelming.
**Distress Tolerance** — concrete techniques for surviving intense emotional and physical discomfort without making it worse. Skills like TIPP (Temperature, Intense exercise, Paced breathing, Progressive relaxation) are immediately applicable during withdrawal.
**Emotion Regulation** — understanding and managing the emotional storms that accompany detox. Many people used substances to regulate emotions they couldn't otherwise tolerate. DBT teaches alternative strategies.
**Interpersonal Effectiveness** — communicating your needs to medical staff, family, and peers during treatment. Learning to ask for help, set boundaries, and maintain self-respect in relationships.
